RECENT NEWS:

PRESSED FOR LUCK's time is running out!  Only 6 more hours to get your free copy of this short story.

I have started my first nonfiction work, a book on revenue stamps printed in Mexico.  The working title of this philatelic work is THE DISTRICT OVERPRINTS FOUND ON REVENUE STAMPS OF MEXICO.  It will take 2 months to get the first draft done, and it will be available on Create Space (Amazon print-on-demand).

I told my friends on Twitter:  #amwriting Golly, what's going to happen when I start writing nonfiction? Will my friends abandon me?

For my SPECIAL, SPECIAL friends, who read my unpublished manuscripts way, way back before I ever tried publishing, an announcement:  SAMMY LEMKIN, the protagonist of my first novel, HERO OF DREAMS, OR THE MAKING OF SAMMY LEMKIN, will appear in cameo in a short story I am planning.  The working title for the short story is:  THE SIRIUS SLIM CONVERGENCE, although this might change as it sounds a bit too much like an episode of the Big Bang Theory.

Apparently, I am impoverished enough at character creation that I have to just re-using the same poor saps over and over again...

A COLD WAR STORY

One of the things I loved about my father was that he told good stories, especially about his time in WWII trying not to get shot by Germans. I can’t relate such stories, never having served in a war, but I might have one “Cold War story,” because of my brief stint in the military during that time.

Decades ago, I was at the induction center in Tacoma, getting my physical with hundreds of other teenagers, when I noticed one fellow who did not exactly fit in: Tall, broad, blond-haired and square-jawed, this fellow was having an argument with the people who were inducting us.

“I am Polish Air Force!” he told them in broken English. The inductors were trying to explain to the gentleman how those credentials alone did not qualify him to serve in the U.S. Air Force, that he had to have U.S. citizenship. To this and every subsequent statement, the fellow responded with the only other English phrase he apparently had memorized: “Kill Russian!!!” This only confused the people trying to help him and to explain things, without the benefit of a Polish interpreter.

I was just then jostled away from the scene with all the other naked teenagers, with the guy still exclaiming, “Kill Russian!” So, I never found out what happened to him. Nor did I discover how he could have gotten into the induction center and disrobed for the physical without anyone discovering he was Polish, or checking his ID. (Perhaps he just wandered in off the street. Remember, this was the early days of the all-volunteer military.)

A true story, which is the best kind. And my one sincere “Cold War” story.

My collection of short stories, TWENTY TWELVE is available.  See it at Amazon:

This represents more of my "Full Blown" work than Inclemency.  One of the short stories in this volume, COCTEAU'S ANGEL, was runner up in the PNWA writer's contest in 2013.  Another, MISSING LINK, was reviewed by Terry Bisson, who gave me a short blurb in exchange.  I feel a few of the 17 stories in this volume (18 if you include Inclemency) are amongst the best I've written.  THE VOID is my personal favorite, because of the unusual perspective of beings which might be sub-sub-atomic particles, OR they may be ordinary people interacting on social media.

More on this volume to follow, stay tuned.  Including a GIVEAWAY CONTEST where you can get a copy for FREE, just by watching an "Nthuziman" video from BRUCE NELSON.
